National Flag of the Democratic and Popular Algerian
Republic (1962)
al-Jumhuriya al-Jazariya ad-Dimuqratiya ash-Shabiya
Prior to independence, the
current national flag was used by the Front de Liberation Nationale
in
its campaign to end French colonial rule in Algeria.
It is believed the
flag was designed in 1928 by an early leader of the independence
movement,
Massali Haj.
The current flag dates from the 3rd of July 1962.
The Symbolic Meaning
The crescent moon and star is
traditional symbol of Islam.
It is interesting to note the extension
of the horns on the crescent of the Algerian flag. They are
are longer than the horns of other crescents appearing on other national
flags. The
people of Algeria believe long horns on a crescent will promote
happiness.
The colour green
represents Islam, white is for purity and red symbolizes liberty.
