National Flag of the State of Antigua and Barbuda (1967)

Antigua and Barbuda is an island nation in the West Indies, made up of three islands: Antigua, Barbuda and Redonda.

The flag was introduced when Antigua and Barbuda became self-governing on the 27th of February 1967.

Independence was attained on the 1st of November 1981, with the popular flag remaining unchanged.

The Symbolic Meaning

The flag portrays the relaxed, bright, tropical image consistent with the Caribbean.

Black is symbolic of the nation's African heritage, blue symbolizes hope and red represents the
energy and dynamism of the people.

Yellow, blue and white graphically represent the sun, the sea and the sand, embraced within the 'V' shape, representing Victory.

The sun also symbolises new beginnings, the flag having been adopted at the time of self-government, moving towards independence.
