The independent,
autonomous principality of Bulgaria was established in July 1878 as a
result of the Treaty of Berlin, which dismantled much of the Ottoman
(Turkish) Empire.
In the same year,
Bulgaria adopted a white, green and red tricolour.
The design of the flag is
based on the Russian national flag, with the blue stripe of the Russian
flag being replaced by green. It is a sign of appreciation,
acknowledging Russia's support during Bulgaria's fight for
independence.
From 1947 until 1990, the Bulgarian coat of arms was placed on the
white stripe at the hoist (left) edge, but when the communist regime collapsed, Bulgaria removed
the coat of arms and reverted to the simple tricolour of white, green and
red.
The plain tricolour first
adopted in 1878 was
re-adopted on the 20th of November 1990. |
