National Flag of the Republic of Bulgaria (1990)
Republika Bulgariya

The independent, autonomous principality of Bulgaria was established in July 1878 as a result of the Treaty of Berlin, which dismantled much of the Ottoman (Turkish) Empire.

In the same year, Bulgaria adopted a white, green and red tricolour.

The design of the flag is based on the Russian national flag, with the blue stripe of the Russian flag being replaced by green. It is a sign of appreciation, acknowledging Russia's support during Bulgaria's fight for independence.

From 1947 until 1990, the Bulgarian coat of arms was placed on the white stripe at the hoist (left) edge, but when the communist regime collapsed, Bulgaria removed the coat of arms and reverted to the simple tricolour of white, green and red.

The plain tricolour first adopted in 1878 was re-adopted on the 20th of November 1990.

The Symbolic Meaning

The white and red stripes are based on those of the Russian flag used at the time Bulgaria achieved independence from the Ottoman Empire.

White is said to represent a love of peace, red is symbolic of the valour of the people, while green is thought to be symbolic of freedom and agriculture, at the same time representing the youthfulness of the nation.
