National Flag of the Kingdom of Cambodia (1993)

The current Cambodian flag is a re-adoption of a design first used by the country on the 29th of October 1948 and flown until 1970, when a political coup overthrew the reigning monarchy.

Throughout the 1970s Cambodia suffered savage civil upheaval, including another political coup, led by the communist inspired political party, the Khmer Rouge in 1975.

During their rule, the Khmer Rouge briefly changed the country's name to Kampuchea. Several different national flags were used during this turbulent period.

In May 1993, multi-party elections were held and, on the 30th of June 1993, the current flag was adopted.

The Symbolic Meaning

Red and blue are traditional Cambodian colours. Red represents the nation of Cambodia and blue its royalty.

The black outlined white temple is a national symbol of Cambodia. It is a stylised representation of a 12th century temple located in central Cambodia at Angkor Wat.
