Djibouti
became a colony of France at the end of the 19th century. At the time
of colonisation, Djibouti was called French Somaliland, a referendum
held in 1967 decided the country should stay a French ruled territory
and in the same year changed its name to the French Territory of the
Afars and Issas (after the two main ethnic groups of Djibouti). Independence
was achieved on the 27th of June 1977 and the country was renamed
after its capital city, Djibouti. On the same day the current
national flag was adopted. Djibouti's
flag is based on a flag originally used by the Ligue
Populaire Africaine pour I'independence (LPAI), a nationalist political
party that led the campaign for Djibouti's independence. |
