National Flag of the Republic of Djibouti (1977)

Djibouti became a colony of France at the end of the 19th century. At the time of colonisation, Djibouti was called French Somaliland, a referendum held in 1967 decided the country should stay a French ruled territory and in the same year changed its name to the French Territory of the Afars and Issas (after the two main ethnic groups of Djibouti).

Independence was achieved on the 27th of June 1977 and the country was renamed after its capital city, Djibouti. On the same day the current national flag was adopted.

Djibouti's flag is based on a flag originally used by the Ligue Populaire Africaine pour I'independence (LPAI), a nationalist political party that led the campaign for Djibouti's independence.

The Symbolic Meaning

Blue represents the sea and sky, as well as the Issas people. Green symbolises the earth and countryside, as well as the Afar and white is symbolic of peace.

The red five-pointed star represents the struggle for independence and the unity of the nation.
