Georgia formed part of the
Russian Empire until the Russian Revolution of 1917
provided an opportunity for a brief lasting independent Georgian state.
On the 25th of March 1918,
Georgia adopted its current national flag for the first time; this was
withdrawn in 1921 after the annexation of Georgia by the newly formed Union of
Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR).
As the Soviet Union began
to collapse in the late 1980s and central Soviet control relaxed,
Georgia re-adopted its national flag on the 14th of November 1990.
In
April 1991, Georgia proclaimed its independence from the Soviet Union. |
