National Flag of the Republic of Guinea (1958)

Guinea was French colony from the late 19th century until the 2nd of October 1958, when independence was achieved.

The design of the Guinea flag is based on the French national flag, but replaces the French blue, white and red with the pan-African colours of red, yellow and green.

The pan-African colours have been adopted by many African ex-colonies and symbolise African independence and unity.

It is believed the colours originated from the flag of Ethiopia, the oldest independent nation in Africa.

The colours were also those of the Democratic Party of Guinea, the nationalist political party that led the fight for Guinea independence.

The current national flag was adopted on the 10th of November 1958.

The Symbolic Meaning

Red represents the sacrifice of the people and work. Yellow symbolises the sun, mineral wealth and justice, while green represents the country’s lush forests, agriculture and solidarity.

The three parts of the flag echo the national motto: Travail, Justice, Solidarite, which translates to 'Work, Justice, Solidarity'.
